What's Covered

Individual and family health plans cover inpatient and outpatient treatment, maternity care, diagnostic services, and access to a network of hospitals and clinics in the UAE, with some plans extending to treatment abroad. Plans range from essential, budget-friendly cover to premium plans with wider hospital access and lower excesses.

Who Needs It

UAE residents not covered under an employer's group scheme, including dependents, domestic workers, and self-employed individuals, are required to hold their own health insurance. Families often combine several members under one family plan for simpler management and, in some cases, better pricing.

Got questions? We've got answers

Straight answers to what individuals and families ask us most about health insurance in Abu Dhabi.

Ask Us a Question

+

Is health insurance mandatory for individuals and families in Abu Dhabi?

Yes. Every resident of Abu Dhabi must have valid health insurance, and it's required for visa issuance and renewal. Employers must insure their sponsored employees, plus one spouse and up to three children under 18. Anyone else a resident sponsors, such as additional children, parents or domestic workers, must be insured by the sponsor.

+

My employer covers me. Do I need separate cover for my family?

It depends on your family. In Abu Dhabi, your employer's plan must include your spouse and up to three children under 18. If you have more children, sponsor your parents, or want a higher level of cover than your employer provides, you'll need an individual or family policy for them.

+

Can I get health insurance for my parents?

Yes. If you sponsor your parents' residence visa, you're responsible for insuring them. Premiums for older ages are higher, and insurers may ask for a medical declaration before offering cover. We compare insurers to find the best terms for your parents' age and health.

+

What's the difference between a basic and an enhanced plan?

A basic plan meets the Department of Health (DOH) minimum requirements, with a limited hospital network and set co-payments. Enhanced plans offer wider networks, lower co-payments, higher annual limits and extras such as dental, optical or cover outside the UAE. The right choice depends on your budget and which hospitals you want access to.

+

Can I use my insurance outside Abu Dhabi or outside the UAE?

It depends on your plan's area of cover. Many plans cover treatment across the UAE, while cover abroad is usually limited to emergencies or available only on higher-tier plans. Always check the network and area of cover before choosing a plan, especially if you travel often.

+

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?

This depends on the plan and insurer. You'll usually be asked to declare existing conditions when applying, and some plans cover them in full, while others apply waiting periods or limits. Declaring accurately matters: undeclared conditions can lead to claims being rejected.

+

How is the premium for individual health insurance calculated?

Insurers mainly consider age, the plan level and network, the area of cover, co-payments and, for some plans, your medical history. Family policies are priced per member, so each person's age affects the total.
